Domitian spent much of his youth in the shadow of his family. He had a good education in reading and writing. He could quote famous poets like Homer and Virgil.

Some writers said he was very smart and well-spoken. Others said he was sometimes lazy or suspicious. It is hard to know his true personality today.

As emperor, Domitian worked to make the Roman Empire strong. He focused on the economy by changing the value of Roman coins.

He worked to expand the defenses at the edges of the empire. This was a big job to keep the lands safe. He wanted to make sure the empire stayed steady and strong.

Domitian also led the empire through several wars. In Britain, his general Agricola made big gains. Agricola tried to conquer a place called Caledonia, which is now Scotland.

Domitian also fought wars in Dacia. Dacia is the land we now call Romania. He fought against a leader named King Decebalus.

Domitian was unable to win a final victory in those wars. These conflicts showed how much work it took to rule such large lands.

Domitian had a very strong way of ruling. He wanted to control many parts of public life. He even tried to control how people behaved through his role as a censor.

This style of ruling made him very popular with the army. The regular people in Rome also liked him. However, the Senate did not like his style. They thought he was a tyrant who took too much power. They felt he had taken away their ability to make decisions.

His reign ended in the year 96. Court officials assassinated him, which means they killed him.

After he died, a man named Nerva became the new emperor. The Senate was so angry that they tried to erase his memory. They wanted people to forget he was ever leader. Later writers like Tacitus and Suetonius wrote that he was a cruel man. But modern historians see him differently. They say his work helped create a peaceful time for the empire later on.
