Djembe

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The djembe is a very loud drum from West Africa.

It has a shape like a goblet. The body is carved from hard wood. The top is made of goatskin. A player uses their bare hands to play it.

In the Bambara language, the name means "everyone gather together in peace." This shows why the drum is so special. It brings people together. Some say a great player can make the drum "talk." This means they tell a story with the sounds.

Players use three main sounds: bass, tone, and slap. The bass is a low sound. The tone and slap are higher. Masters can make up to twenty-five different sounds!

For a long time, only men played the djembe. Now, things are changing. Women are playing the drum more often. Some even form all-female groups. These groups travel to show their skill to the world. Today, people all over the globe study and play this drum.
