A distribution board is a very important part of an electric system.

It takes a big flow of power and splits it up. This sends power to many smaller paths called circuits. These circuits go to different parts of a building.

Inside the box, there are parts to keep you safe. Most boards have a main switch. This switch can turn off all the power at once. Many boards also use a circuit breaker. This is a switch that flips off if there is a problem. Some boards use a device called an RCD. An RCD helps stop power if it leaks out.

In the United Kingdom, people call this a consumer unit. Older homes might have a fuse box. These used small fuses to stop too much power.

Some very old boxes were even made of wood.

Today, most boards use metal or plastic. They use busbars to carry the power to each switch. These bars act like roads for the electricity.
