Warwick grew up singing in church in Newark, New Jersey. She sang gospel music with her family group, the Drinkard Singers. This group was made of many of her relatives. They performed often in the New York area. Even as a young girl, she worked hard. She would take the bus and the subway to Manhattan. She sang background vocals in studios and then went home for schoolwork.

She later studied music at the Hartt College of Music.

Her big break happened in a recording studio. She was singing background music for a group called the Drifters. A songwriter named Burt Bacharach heard her voice. He hired her to make demo recordings. A demo is a practice version of a song. These demos were meant to show how a song might sound.

This song sold millions of copies around the world. "Walk On By" was another massive hit for her. She was a very successful singer in both the U.S. and the UK.

Today, we remember her as one of the greatest artists ever. She is ranked number 74 on Billboard's list of greatest artists. Her music has lasted for many decades. She also worked as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN. This meant she helped people through the Food and Agriculture Organization.
