Dimethylformamide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dimethylformamide is a clear liquid used by scientists all over the world. Most people call it DMF for short. It is a special kind of liquid called a solvent. A solvent is something that can dissolve or mix with other substances. DMF is very good at this job because it can mix with water and many organic liquids.

It is also a polar aprotic solvent. This means it has a certain electrical charge that helps it work in many chemical reactions. Because it does not evaporate quickly, it is a very helpful tool in many different labs.

There are many ways that DMF works in science. It can act as a reagent, which is a substance used to cause a change in another substance. For example, it is used in the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction to make aromatic compounds. In this process, DMF turns into a special thing called a chloroiminium ion. It is also used in the Bouveault aldehyde synthesis to create aldehydes.

Sometimes, DMF can even help keep gases safe. Some gases, like acetylene, can explode if they are squeezed too tightly. DMF helps turn these gases into a safe liquid solution for moving them.

We can learn about the history of this liquid by looking at the past. A French chemist named Albert Verley first found DMF in 1893. He made it by distilling a mixture of dimethylamine hydrochloride and potassium formate. Today, factories make it in a different way. They often combine methyl formate with dimethylamine. They can also make it by reacting dimethylamine with carbon monoxide.

Scientists are even looking at ways to make it using carbon dioxide and special catalysts.

DMF is used to make many things we see every day. It helps produce acrylic fibers and different types of plastics. It is also used to make medicines, pesticides, and strong glues. You might find it in synthetic leathers, films, or surface coatings.

It is even used to help make dyes. In a lab, scientists use it to separate tiny carbon nanotubes. It is also used in a process called electrospinning to create very fine fibers.

Even though it is helpful, scientists must be careful with DMF. If the liquid is not pure, it might smell like fish. This happens because of tiny bits of a chemical called dimethylamine.

DMF can also make some plastics swell up. In 2018, the Danish Environmental Protective Agency found DMF in certain toys called squishies. Because of this, those toys were removed from the market in Denmark. Scientists always study how these chemicals affect the world to keep people safe.
