His music helped shape the style of many famous masters. These include George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. Many people consider him one of the greatest composers of the 1600s. His work remains a vital part of music history today.

Buxtehude's organ music often uses a special style called the stylus phantasticus.

His most famous pieces are called organ praeludia, or preludes. These works often move between two different ways of playing. One way is free improvisation, which sounds like making music up on the spot. The other way is strict counterpoint, where different musical lines follow very careful rules.

He also used the organ's pedals to create deep, powerful sounds. Many of his pieces include a fugue, which is a complex pattern of repeating themes. He would often start with a short musical idea and grow it into something huge.

It is hard to know exactly when or where Buxtehude was born.

Most scholars believe he was born around 1637 in Helsingborg. At that time, this area was part of Denmark. His father, Johannes, was also an organist at several churches. Dieterich worked as an organist in Helsingborg and Helsingør early in his career. Later, he moved to the city of Lübeck in 1668. He took over the job at the Marienkirche church. He succeeded a man named Franz Tunder there. He even married Tunder's daughter, Anna Margarethe, after he started the job.

He organized special evening concerts called Abendmusik. These performances were very popular and attracted musicians from many different places. They continued to be held in the church until the year 1810. Buxtehude also served as the church treasurer. He had a large family with seven daughters. One of his most famous organ pieces is the Prelude and Chaconne in C major. This piece shows how he could combine many different musical ideas into one long work.

Buxtehude's influence on other musicians was truly massive.

In 1703, two famous musicians named Handel and Mattheson traveled to meet him. They even wanted his job at the Marienkirche. Buxtehude offered them the position, but with one special rule. The new organist had to marry his eldest daughter. Both men turned the offer down and left the next day. However, a young Johann Sebastian Bach was very inspired by him. In 1705, Bach walked over 250 miles to Lübeck just to hear Buxtehude play. Bach wanted to understand the secrets of his great musical art.
