This place was once called Kohleninsel, or Coal Island. Now, the island is known as Museumsinsel. Before 1772, the island had no buildings because it flooded often. After a big flood in 1899, the buildings were rebuilt with better protection. The city of Munich donated this island for the museum project. It is a very unique spot for such a large collection.

A man named Oskar von Miller helped start the museum.

Oskar von Miller finally opened the new building in 1925. During World War II, the museum was badly damaged by bombs. By the end of 1944, 80% of the buildings were hurt. Even 20% of the museum's exhibits were destroyed. After the war, the museum had to close for repairs. It took many years to grow back to its full size.

Today, the museum has several different branches to explore.
