Determinism is a big idea in philosophy. It is the view that all events happen in only one way.

Some thinkers believe that every event has a cause. This creates a long chain of events. This chain can stretch all the way back to the start of the universe.

There are many different types of determinism. Causal determinism says that laws of nature and past events make the future. Nomological determinism is a common type of this view. It says the past and present dictate what will happen next.

Some people talk about biological determinism. This is the idea that our genes fix our behaviors. Others talk about theological determinism. This is the belief that a god decides all things. Some say a god knows the future perfectly. This means the future is already set.

People often debate if we have free will. Free will is the power to choose our own path. Some say free will and determinism can work together. Others say they cannot both be true.

Even in science, people wonder about this. Quantum mechanics looks at how tiny particles move in ways that might be random.
