Some stores are part of a large chain. Other stores are independent and stand alone. Today, people shop in many ways. Some choose high-end stores for luxury. Others visit discount stores to save money. Since the 2000s, many people also shop through e-commerce on the internet.

These stores work by grouping items together. In a traditional store, you might find sales counters in every department. In a discount store, people often check out near the front. There are many types of these shops. Mainline stores sell mid-to-high-end goods at full price. Examples include Macy's or Nordstrom. Junior department stores are smaller versions of these. Discount stores sell items at a lower price. They might sell extra stock from other stores.

Some huge stores are called hypermarkets. These sell groceries along with other goods.

Department stores have a long history. One of the first was Bennett's in Derby, England. It started as a hardware shop in 1734. The first reliably dated store was Harding, Howell & Co. It opened in 1796 on Pall Mall in London. This shop had four main departments. One area sold furs and fans. Another sold silks, lace, and gloves. A third area had jewelry and French clocks. The last part sold dresses and hats.

In Australia, David Jones opened in 1838. It is the oldest continuously operating department store franchise in the world.

These stores changed how people live and shop. In the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution changed life in Britain. New inventions and steam power helped stores grow. In Paris, railroads brought more shoppers to the city. These shoppers liked looking at large glass windows.
