A dental implant is a tool used to replace missing teeth. It acts like a fake tooth root.

First, a dentist places a small screw into the jaw bone. Most implants are made of titanium. This is a special metal. It can also be made of zirconia, which is a type of ceramic.

Then, a special way called osseointegration happens. This is when the bone grows and bonds tightly to the implant.

This bond makes the implant very strong.

After the bone heals, the dentist adds an abutment. An abutment is a small part that connects the implant to the new tooth. This new tooth is called a prosthesis. Some prostheses are fixed. You cannot take them out. Other types are removable. You can take them out with your fingers.

Implants help people chew and smile. They can replace one tooth or many teeth. They can even help move teeth during orthodontic work. If the bone and gums are healthy, implants can last for a long time. Some implants can work for 15 years or more.
