Dental floss is a thin cord used to clean your teeth.

It is usually made of nylon or silk. A toothbrush is great for cleaning, but it cannot reach everywhere. Floss helps reach the tiny gaps between your teeth. It also reaches spots under the gumline. This helps remove food and dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that sticks to your teeth.

The American Dental Association says flossing can remove up to 80% of plaque. Using it may help prevent gingivitis, which is gum disease. It might also help people wearing orthodontic devices.

Cleaning with floss follows a specific way it works. First, you pull a piece of floss from a plastic dispenser. You can use a small blade on the dispenser to cut it. Then, you hold the floss with your fingers or a tool.

You guide the floss gently between each pair of teeth. You should curve the floss into a 'C' shape against the side of the tooth. This allows you to slide it under the gumline. This step removes food and plaque that hide in those tight spots. Doing this once a day helps toothpaste reach between your teeth.

People have been using floss for a long time. A dentist from New Orleans named Levi Spear Parmly invented the first kind. He lived from 1790 to 1859. In 1819, he suggested using waxed silk thread to clean teeth. He believed this was the most important part of oral care. Companies did not sell floss until 1882. In 1898, Johnson & Johnson got a patent for silk floss. This was the same silk doctors used for stitches. During World War II, Charles C. Bass developed nylon floss.

There are many different types of floss to choose from. Some are waxed, while others are unwaxed.

Waxed floss can slide more easily between teeth. Some waxed types even have fluoride or antibacterial agents. You might also see dental tape, which is wider and flatter. This is good for people with large tooth surfaces. Some people use floss picks, which are plastic wands. These can make it easier to reach back teeth. There are even powered flossers that use power to clean.

Choosing the right tool depends on your mouth. Dentists look at the embrasure space to help. This is the triangular space under the contact point of two teeth.

There are three types of these spaces based on the gums. Type I means the gums fill the space completely. Type II means they fill it only partially. Type III means the gums do not fill the space at all. You can also use a floss threader to help get floss through tight spots.
