Unix itself is a multiuser operating system that changed computing principles. An operating system is the essential software that manages computer hardware and software resources. In the 1960s, Ritchie and Thompson worked on an earlier system called Multics. Later, Thompson developed a new system from scratch on an old PDP-7 machine. In 1970, Brian Kernighan suggested the name "Unix" as a pun on "Multics." Ritchie then created C to replace the earlier B programming language. This allowed for more robust system-level programming. The resulting Unix system established many computing concepts that are still used in modern operating systems like Linux and BSD.

Dennis Ritchie's path to these discoveries began with a strong scientific education. He was born in Bronxville, New York, in 1941. His father, Alistair E. Ritchie, was also a scientist at Bell Labs. Dennis moved to Summit, New Jersey, and graduated from Summit High School. He attended Harvard University, earning degrees in physics and applied mathematics in 1963. In 1967, he joined the Bell Labs Computing Science Research Center. Although he completed a PhD thesis draft on "Computational Complexity and Program Structure" in 1968, he never officially received the degree. His lost dissertation was eventually found by the Computer History Museum in 2020.

Throughout his career, Ritchie's work led to significant scientific breakthroughs. In the 1970s, he collaborated with James Reeds and Robert Morris on a ciphertext-only attack. They studied the M-209 US cipher machine, which could solve messages of 2,000 to 2,500 letters. They chose not to publish this work after discussions with the National Security Agency. This decision was made because the principle applied to machines still used by foreign governments. Beyond Unix and C, Ritchie also worked on the Plan 9 and Inferno operating systems. He also contributed to the development of the Limbo programming language. He eventually retired from Lucent Technologies in 2007 after serving as head of the System Software Research Department.

His achievements earned him many of the highest honors in science and technology.
