Bergkamp's football journey began in his hometown of Amsterdam. He was raised in a working-class suburb by his parents, Wim and Tonnie. His father, an electrician and amateur footballer, named him after the Scottish striker Denis Law. Bergkamp joined the youth system of the famous club Ajax at age 11. The manager Johan Cruyff gave him his professional debut on December 14, 1986.

In 1993, Bergkamp moved to Italy to play for Inter Milan. He signed for a fee of £7.1 million, which included teammate Wim Jonk. At the time, he believed Serie A was the biggest league in the world. His time in Italy was difficult due to organized Italian defenses. He struggled with stress injuries and fatigue after the 1994 World Cup. During his second season, he scored only 5 goals in 26 appearances. The Italian press was often critical of his shy personality. One publication even created a nickname for his poor performances.

Bergkamp rejuvenated his career when he joined Arsenal in June 1995. The transfer fee was estimated at £7.5 million, a club record at the time.

His career reached a turning point with the arrival of manager Arsène Wenger in 1996. Wenger used Bergkamp as a fulcrum for the team's attacking play. This style focused on continental attacking football and strict fitness regimens. Bergkamp helped Arsenal win three Premier League titles, including one unbeaten season. He also helped the club win three FA Cup trophies. He reached the 2006 UEFA Champions League final with the team.

On the international stage, Bergkamp represented the Netherlands in many major tournaments. At Euro 1992, he scored three goals to help his country reach the semi-finals. During the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he scored a legendary winning goal against Argentina. This moment is often called one of the greatest FIFA World Cup goals ever. In 1998, he became the Netherlands' all-time top scorer, surpassing Faas Wilkes.

Many specific moments define Bergkamp's legacy in football history. In 2002, he scored a goal against Newcastle United that was voted the best in the Premier League's first 25 years. The goal involved a delicate flick around defender Nikos Dabizas before a calm finish. He finished third twice in the FIFA World Player of the Year awards. Pelé selected him as one of the FIFA 100 greatest living players. In 2007, he became the first and only Dutch player inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.

Even after retiring from playing, Bergkamp remained involved in the sport. He served as an assistant coach at Ajax between 2011 and 2017.
