Delta wing

A delta wing is a special wing shaped like a triangle.

It gets its name because it looks like the Greek letter delta, which is a triangle. These wings are very important for many kinds of flying. They work well for fast jets that fly faster than sound. They also work for slow things like hang gliders.

Engineers like them because they offer many advantages for building aircraft.

Building a delta wing is a smart way to make a plane strong. The long part where the wing meets the body is called the root chord.

This long shape makes the wing very stiff and strong. It can also be made lighter than other types of swept wings. Because they are sturdy, they are often cheaper to build. This helped planes like the MiG-21 become very successful. The thick shape also leaves extra space inside for fuel.

Flying with these wings uses a cool trick called vortex lift.

When a plane flies slowly, it must tilt its nose up high. This causes air to spill over the sharp front edge. The air spins into a swirling pattern called a vortex. This vortex stays attached to the top of the wing. The spinning air helps the plane stay up in the sky. Some planes, like the Concorde, use a smooth curve called an ogee wing to help this happen.

Designers have made many different versions of the delta wing. Some planes are "tailless," meaning they do not have a small wing at the back.

These are very light and simple to build. Other planes use a "tailed delta" design to help with control.

Some even use canards, which are small wings near the front.

A canard can help a plane move more easily. There are also "cropped" deltas where the tips are cut off to help with lift.

People have studied triangular shapes for a long time. In the 1500s, an engineer named Conrad Haas described triangular fins for rockets.

A true delta wing for an airplane was patented in 1867 by J.W. Butler and E. Edwards. Later, in 1909, J.W. Dunne made a stable plane with a wide delta shape. These early ideas led to the amazing jets we see today. From the Avro Vulcan to the modern Eurofighter, the delta wing continues to change how we fly.
