Degrassi is a massive Canadian television franchise that explores the lives of young people.

It follows students attending a fictional secondary school in Toronto. Since 1987, every entry in the series has shared the same continuity. This means characters age and grow alongside the viewers over many years. The franchise is considered one of Canada's most successful media exports. Beyond television, it includes graphic novels, companion books, and soundtracks. This variety allows fans to engage with the stories in many different ways.

Creating these stories involves a specific, collaborative process. Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood often used a style called cinéma vérité. This technique uses handheld cameras and on-location shooting to create a realistic feeling. In the early years, they even filmed at a real house on De Grassi Street. The actors also play a vital role in the writing process. They share their personal experiences with writers like Yan Moore. This helps the writers adapt real life into the characters' journeys. Schuyler also seeks input from the cast during every script read-through.

The franchise has evolved through several distinct stages and series. It began with short films and the series The Kids of Degrassi Street from 1982 to 1986. This transitioned into Degrassi Junior High, which ran from 1987 to 1989. As the original cast aged, the show became Degrassi High from 1989 to 1991. A major revival called Degrassi: The Next Generation aired from 2001 to 2015. This version introduced a new generation of students while keeping some original characters. Later, the series was retooled as simply Degrassi for TeenNick. Finally, a short-lived co-production called Degrassi: Next Class was made for Generation Z.

The history of the franchise is rooted in a partnership between a teacher and an editor. In 1976, Linda Schuyler was a media teacher at Earl Grey Senior Public School. She teamed up with Kit Hood to form Playing With Time Inc. Their first major success was the 1979 short film Ida Makes a Movie. Schuyler purchased the rights to the original book by Kay Chorao for $200. She changed the feline characters from the book into human children. This project proved successful on the CBC, leading to more episodes. This success eventually built the foundation for the entire Degrassi universe.

The significance of Degrassi is seen in its massive viewership and cultural impact. When Degrassi Junior High moved to a primetime slot on the CBC, viewership increased by 40%. By 1988, it was the highest-rated Canadian-made drama in the country. In the United Kingdom, the series reached six million viewers on BBC1. The franchise has also launched many famous careers. For example, the rapper Drake and the actress Nina Dobrev both started on The Next Generation.

These numbers show how deeply the series reached its audience.

Many notable examples of the show's storytelling involve difficult or controversial topics. The series is famous for its sympathetic and authentic portrayal of youth. It has tackled issues like teenage pregnancy, abortion, and LGBT topics. One famous storyline involved a 14-year-old character named Spike Nelson. The episode where she discovers her pregnancy won an International Emmy Award. The show also addressed serious subjects like HIV/AIDS and suicide. These stories often drew international scrutiny and censorship, yet the series remained popular.

Degrassi connects to broader themes of media influence and cultural identity. It serves as a powerful example of how television can reflect societal changes. The franchise has earned prestigious honors, including multiple Gemini Awards and a Peabody Award in 2010. It even received two International Emmy Awards in 1985 and 1987. Because of its lasting importance to Canadian culture, it was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2023. The franchise demonstrates how a single idea can grow into a global cultural icon through decades of storytelling.
