The series follows the residents of Erinsborough, a fictional suburb located in Melbourne, Victoria. Most of the stories take place on Ramsay Street, which is a dead end street. The setting also includes the Lassiters complex. This area contains a hotel, a café, a bar, a police station, a park, and a lawyer's office. The show matters because it explores realistic human connections and suburban life.

Producing the show requires a specific blend of real locations and studio sets. The outdoor scenes are filmed at a real cul-de-sac called Pin Oak Court in Vermont South. This location doubles for the fictional Ramsay Street. The residents of these real houses allow the production crew to film in their yards.

For the interior scenes, the production moves to the FremantleMedia studios in Forest Hill. This process allows the creators to control the environment while making the neighborhood feel authentic. By combining real homes with studio sets, they build the world of Erinsborough.

In its early years, the show focused on specific groups of people. Creator Reg Watson established three main households to drive the initial stories. These included the Ramsay and Robinson families, who share a long history and an ongoing rivalry. Over time, the show expanded by adding three more houses as regular settings on the street. This structure allowed for a wide variety of character interactions. The show's premise relies on these interconnected lives to create drama and humor.

Reg Watson, a television executive, conceived the idea for Neighbours while watching British shows. He wanted a program where teens and adults could talk openly and solve problems together. He aimed to create something that would appeal to both Australian and British audiences. The show was first commissioned by the Seven Network in September 1984 with an $8 million budget. It premiered on 18 March 1985. Although it was successful in Melbourne, it underperformed in Sydney. The Seven Network cancelled the show only four months after it began.

After the initial cancellation, Network Ten immediately commissioned a second production season. This new era began on 20 January 1986. The show eventually became a massive global success. It has been sold to more than sixty countries. In the United Kingdom, the show became incredibly popular on BBC One. At its peak, up to 16 million people watched the show in Britain. This number was larger than the entire population of Australia at that time. In 1988, the entire cast even appeared at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen.

Throughout its history, the show has reached many major milestones. In 1997, it became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. It surpassed the record previously held by A Country Practice. In 2005, the show was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame. The series has also reached massive episode counts, such as its 6,000th episode in 2010 and its 7,000th episode in 2014.

These numbers show the incredible endurance of the production and its characters.

Neighbours also serves as a platform for cultural change and technological growth. In 2008, the show addressed criticisms regarding diversity by adding more ethnically diverse characters and roles. This included introducing Sunny Lee, an exchange student from South Korea. The show has also embraced new technology. In 2011, it became the first television show available via a free iPhone application. This "three-screen approach" helped the show stay connected to its audience through broadcast, online, and mobile platforms. Even after facing cancellation in 2022, a new deal with Amazon Freevee allowed the series to return to screens in 2023.
