Degradation (geology)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Water can change the land. A stream moves over the ground. It can wash bits of dirt away. This makes the land lower. This is called degradation.

Sometimes the water eats into hard rock. This happens when there is not enough dirt. The water takes more than it leaves. This can happen in a stream bed. It can happen on a flat plain.

As the land gets lower, it leaves flat spots. These are called terraces.

Some terraces sit on top of hard rock. Scientists can study these spots. They use special ways to find their age. This helps them see how fast the water works. It is a big change for the land.
