Some people use the word "Yuletide" instead of "Christmas." Yule is an old word for the holiday season. The song title used to be singular. It was called "Deck the Hall" for a long time. It changed to the plural "Halls" around the year 1892. Some versions also leave out certain words about drinking. A version from 1877 in a school journal did this.

The history of the music is quite long. The tune is an old Welsh air. A harpist named John Parry found it in a manuscript. This was during the 1700s. Another harpist named Edward Jones published the melody in 1794. The English lyrics we know were written later. A Scottish musician named Thomas Oliphant wrote them in 1862. He put them in a book called "Welsh Melodies."

Many famous people have worked with this melody.

The great composer Mozart allegedly used the tune in 1778. Another composer named Haydn arranged it in 1803. In 1912, a woman named Ruth Herbert Lewis made a recording. She used a wax cylinder to record a man named Benjamin Davies. He sang a song called "Can y Coach faier" using the melody. This shows how the music traveled through time and places.

Today, the song stays popular on music charts.

A version by Nat King Cole is very well known. His version reached number 13 on the US Holiday charts. It even appeared on charts in places like Poland and Russia. The song connects our modern holidays to very old traditions. It links the Welsh "Nos Galan" to the Christmas we celebrate now. It is a piece of history that we still sing.
