During a debate, people share opposing viewpoints on specific topics. Usually, a person called a moderator helps lead the discussion. An audience might also watch the event happen. Debaters try to use logic and facts to make their points. They also use emotional appeal to reach the people listening. Some debates follow strict rules to decide how they will be judged.

Debates often follow a very specific set of steps. First, a moderator introduces the topic to the group. Then, the speakers are given a set amount of time to talk. They must present their arguments clearly within those time limits. It is important for debaters to be polite during this time. They are not allowed to insult others or talk about unrelated topics. After everyone has spoken, the group might hold a vote. This vote helps them reach a conclusion or decide to talk more later.

One famous group, the Society of Cogers, started in 1755 and still works today. In 1780, there were 35 different societies hosting debates in London. These groups could hold between 650 and 1200 people at once. Many universities also started their own clubs. The Cambridge Union Society was founded in 1815.
