Dean Barrow is a prominent political figure from Belize. He served as the fourth prime minister of the nation. He led the United Democratic Party, which is a major political group in Belize. Before entering politics, Barrow worked as an attorney. This means he practiced law and represented clients in legal matters. His career spanned many decades of service to his country.

Barrow's professional life began with a strong focus on legal studies. He attended St. Michael's College in Belize and the University of the West Indies. He later studied at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica. He also earned degrees from the University of Miami in Florida. These included a Master of Arts in International Relations. In 1974, he began his legal career in Belize City. He first worked with his maternal uncle, Dean Lindo. By 1977, he had become a partner at that firm. Eventually, he formed his own firm called Barrow and Williams with Rodwell Williams.

His transition into politics involved several distinct stages and roles. He first ran for the Belize City Council in December 1983. He won a seat as part of a nine-man slate. In 1984, he ran for the Queen's Square constituency. He won that election against Ralph Fonseca of the People's United Party. This victory led to his appointment to the Manuel Esquivel Cabinet. He served as the Attorney-General and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Later, in 1993, he also became the Minister of National Security. Some people called him the "Minister of Everything" because of his many roles.

Barrow faced significant challenges during the late 1990s. In the 1998 election, his party suffered a major loss. Barrow was one of only three United Democratic Party winners that year. Despite this, he was chosen to lead the party. He became the Leader of the Opposition following Manuel Esquivel. During this time, he led a very small group of representatives. He had only three members in the House of Representatives in 1998. By the next cycle, that number grew to seven members. He worked to rebuild his party during these difficult years.

In 2008, Barrow reached the highest level of government. The United Democratic Party won a massive victory in the general election. They won 25 out of the 31 available seats. Barrow was sworn in as prime minister on February 8, 2008. He made history as the first Black prime minister of Belize. He also took on the role of Minister of Finance. He won a second term on March 7, 2012. He then won a third consecutive term on November 4, 2015. This made him a very long-serving leader in Belizean history.

Barrow eventually decided to retire from his political leadership. He cited health issues as the reason for his departure. While he originally planned to step down in 2019, his Cabinet urged him to stay. They asked him to remain in office until the 2020 general election. He agreed to this request and finished his term. In the 2020 election, he did not run for his House seat. Instead, he endorsed his sister, Denise Barrow, to succeed him. He then returned to private legal practice at his firm.

His personal life includes a large and active family. Barrow has four children from his various relationships. His eldest son, Jamal Barrow, also entered politics. Jamal was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020. He has served as the Leader of the Opposition. Barrow's daughter, Deanne, is a chemical engineer and an attorney. His son, Anwar, works in a lending institution. Barrow married Kim Simplis in 2009 in Savannah, Georgia. Their daughter is named Salima. His life connects the worlds of law, family, and national leadership.
