While studying at Princeton University, he found fun ways to share ideas. He once wrote a poem about a famous political event. For a big school project, he turned the Bill of Rights into a play. He made each rule a character with a personality. One rule was a loud person who would not stop talking. Another rule was a person who had no self-esteem. He also joined a group called the Princeton Triangle Club.

Before he was a full-time writer, Kelley studied to be a lawyer. He went to the Boston University School of Law. While there, he wrote for a comedy group called the Legal Follies. After graduating, he worked at a law firm in Boston. He dealt with things like real estate and small criminal cases. In 1983, he started writing a movie script as a hobby. This script eventually became a film called From the Hip in 1987. This early work helped him find his path in Hollywood.

His career took off when he joined the show L.A. Law in 1986.
