He is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His career was defined by constant reinvention and unique visual presentation. Many people call him the "chameleon of rock" because of this ability to change. He transformed his musical style and stagecraft many times throughout his life. This constant evolution had a massive impact on the world of popular music.

Bowie's creative process often involved building elaborate personae to present to the world. He studied art, music, and design before starting his professional music career in 1962. He also studied mime, which is a form of dramatic art using body movements. This training helped him create characters that felt like they were from another planet. He used these characters to blend music with theater and visual art. This method allowed him to change his sound and his look simultaneously. Each new era brought a completely different experience for his audience.

His musical journey moved through several distinct stages and genres. In 1972, he embraced the glam rock era with his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. This character was central to the album *The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars*. By 1975, he shifted toward a sound he called "plastic soul." This style led to his first major success in the United States. Later, in 1977, he began a series of electronic-influenced albums in Berlin. This period is known as the "Berlin Trilogy," which included the albums *Low*, *"Heroes"*, and *Lodger*.

Bowie's early life in London provided many of his lifelong influences. Born David Robert Jones in 1947, he grew up in the south London borough of Lambeth. As a child, he showed a striking interest in dancing and music. Listening to American artists like Little Richard and Elvis Presley deeply moved him. His half-brother, Terry Burns, introduced him to modern jazz, Buddhism, and Beat poetry. These diverse interests shaped the complex themes found in his later work. Even a school injury in 1962 left him with a permanently dilated pupil.

Throughout his career, Bowie achieved massive commercial and critical success. His total record sales are estimated to be over 100 million worldwide. This makes him one of the best-selling musicians in history. He received many prestigious accolades, including six Grammy Awards and four Brit Awards. In 1996, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As of 2022, he was recognized as the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century. His ability to reach different audiences across decades is quite rare.

Beyond the recording studio, Bowie was a prolific and talented actor. He appeared in several cult films and major motion pictures. Notable roles included appearances in *The Man Who Fell to Earth* and *Labyrinth*.

He also acted in films such as *Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me* and *The Prestige*. His acting work often complemented his musical personae. He used film to explore the same themes of identity and transformation. This multi-disciplinary approach helped cement his status as a true artist.

Bowie's career concluded with a final burst of creativity. After a long hiatus from recording, he returned in 2013 with the album *The Next Day*. His final studio album, *Blackstar*, was released just two days before his death in 2016.
