David Blaine is a prominent American magician, mentalist, and endurance performer.

He is famous for blending traditional magic with extreme physical challenges. Unlike stage magicians who use elaborate sets, Blaine often performs in public spaces. His goal is to return magic to the intimate style of 100 years ago. This approach focuses on the spontaneous reactions of people in the street. His work explores the limits of the human body and the psychology of wonder.

Blaine's career began with significant television success in the late 1990s. In 1997, his special *Street Magic* aired on ABC. This program helped him gain widespread fame. He followed this with *Magic Man* in 1998. This special used handheld cameras to film him in various locations. He entertained people in places like Atlantic City, Compton, and San Francisco. These films captured the visceral, shocked reactions of unsuspecting pedestrians.

Many of Blaine's most famous acts are endurance stunts. These involve staying in difficult conditions for long periods. In 1999, he performed *Buried Alive*. He was placed in an underground plastic box for seven days. A 3-ton water-filled tank sat on top of him. In 2000, he attempted *Frozen in Time* in Times Square. He was encased in a transparent block of ice for 63 hours, 42 minutes, and 15 seconds. A tube provided him with air and water during this time.

Blaine has also tested his body through starvation and submersion. During his 2003 stunt *Above the Below*, he lived in a Plexiglas box in London. The box hung over the River Thames for 44 days.

He drank only water and consumed no food. This stunt caused him to lose 25 percent of his original body weight. His body mass index dropped from 29.0 to 21.6. In 2006, he performed *Drowned Alive*. He was submerged in a large sphere of isotonic saline for seven days. This event caused him to suffer kidney and liver damage.

Physical limits and medical science are often connected to his work. In 2008, Blaine attempted a Guinness World Record for oxygen-assisted static apnea. He spent 23 minutes inhaling pure oxygen before entering the water. He successfully held his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds. This surpassed the previous record of 16 minutes and 32 seconds.

His stunts often lead to medical studies. For example, researchers at Yale University monitored him after his submersion stunt. They studied how the human body reacts to prolonged submersion and extreme physiological stress.

Blaine's performances have drawn attention from world leaders and celebrities. During his London stunt, U.S. President George W. Bush mentioned him in a speech. In 2008, Blaine announced his *Dive of Death* performance with Donald Trump.

In this stunt, he hung upside down over Wollman Rink in Central Park. He planned to remain in this position for 60 hours. He had to come down once every hour for medical checks and to use the bathroom. These high-profile events show how his work bridges entertainment and global news.

Beyond physical stunts, Blaine also explores illusions and mentalism. In his 2010 special *What Is Magic?*, he performed a difficult illusion. He appeared to catch a .22 caliber bullet in a small metal cup using only his mouth. He also explored electricity in his 2012 stunt *Electrified*. He stood on a pillar in New York City surrounded by seven Tesla coils. These coils produced a continuous electric discharge of one million volts or more. Through these various methods, Blaine continues to challenge how audiences perceive reality and human capability.
