The date palm, known scientifically as *Phoenix dactylifera*, is a flowering plant in the Arecaceae family.

Physically, the date palm is a slow-growing plant that can live for over 100 years.
One of the most important biological facts about the date palm is that it is dioecious. This means that individual plants are either male or female. The sex is determined by an XY sex-determination system. Researchers have identified three specific genes that are present in all males but absent in females. Because only female plants produce fruit, growers must manage the population carefully. While you can grow them from seeds, only about 50% of those seedlings will be female. To ensure better quality and faster results, most commercial farms use cuttings from known fruit-bearing plants.
Pollination is a critical step in producing dates. In the wild, wind carries pollen between the separate male and female trees. In commercial orchards, however, humans perform hand-pollination to ensure a good harvest. Skilled laborers often climb ladders to reach the flowers. In Iraq, workers use a special climbing tool to stay attached to the trunk. One male plant can pollinate up to 100 female plants with this help. Since males only serve as pollinators, they are often pruned away to make room for more female trees.
There are three main groups of date cultivars based on their texture. These include soft varieties, such as the Medjool; semi-dry varieties, like Deglet Nour; and dry varieties, such as Thoory.
History shows that humans have relied on the date palm for millennia. Archaeological evidence shows date cultivation in the Indus Valley around 7000 BCE.
Today, the date palm is part of a complex global system.
