It is one of the two official languages there. Many people use it to talk to each other. This helps different groups of people understand one another. We call this a lingua franca. This means it is a common language for many groups.

Dari is a very old language. It comes from Middle Persian. That was a language used by the Sassanid ruling family. Long ago, it was the language of kings and courts. The name Dari might mean "court" language. It is also used in beautiful poetry. Some poets even compared the language to sweet candy.

Today, many people speak Dari. About 30.6 million people in Afghanistan use it. It is used on the radio and TV. It is also used in books and by the government. Some people call it Afghan Persian. It is very close to Tajiki, a language from Tajikistan. Even though it is different from the Persian in Iran, people can still understand each other. It is a big part of life in many cities like Kabul and Herat.
