Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a versatile English artist and man of letters.

He worked as a poet, illustrator, painter, and translator. Rossetti is most famous for co-founding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. He started this group with artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Their goal was to reform English art through a specific philosophy. They rejected the mechanistic style of Mannerist artists. They also disliked the formal training methods of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Instead, they sought to return to the intense colors and complex compositions of Quattrocento Italian and Flemish art.

Rossetti's creative process often involved a deep connection between words and images. He did not see poetry and painting as separate things. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his specific paintings. For example, he wrote poems for works like *The Girlhood of Mary Virgin* (1849). He also created art to illustrate his sister Christina Rossetti's poems, such as *Goblin Market*. This method allowed him to create a unified experience for the viewer. He believed that an illustration should not just echo the text. Instead, it should function as an independent, allegorical subject within the book.

His artistic style was defined by medieval revivalism and sensuality. Rossetti was much more interested in the medieval period than the modern world. He spent many years translating the works of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. These translations, such as *The Early Italian Poets* published in 1861, inspired his visual art. He developed unique technical methods to achieve his specific looks. In watercolours, he used thick pigments mixed with gum. This technique created rich effects similar to medieval illuminations. He also developed a novel drawing technique using pen and ink.

Rossetti's early life in London provided a rich foundation for his work. He was born on May 12, 1828, to an Italian scholar and an Anglican mother. His family was a circle of intellectuals and writers. His sister, Christina Rossetti, became a famous poet. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became a noted critic. Gabriel studied at the Henry Sass' Drawing Academy from 1841 to 1845. He later enrolled in the Antique School of the Royal Academy. After leaving the Academy in 1848, he studied under Ford Madox Brown.

The middle years of his career saw shifts in his subject matter. His early oil paintings, like *Ecce Ancilla Domini!* (1850), showed realist qualities. However, after facing harsh criticism, he turned more toward watercolours. He began to prefer symbolic and mythological images over realistic ones. His personal life also heavily influenced his subjects. He worked closely with models who became his muses. These included Elizabeth Siddal, whom he married in 1860, as well as Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.

Rossetti's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. His work was a major precursor to the Aesthetic movement. He also influenced the European Symbolists. Many famous artists drew inspiration from his visions of Arthurian romance. William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones were notably influenced by his work. Even though they never met him, they used his ideas in their own projects. For instance, Morris founded the *Oxford and Cambridge Magazine* in 1856 to promote his ideas. He recruited Rossetti as a contributor to this publication.

One of his most significant professional achievements involved book arts. He was deeply involved in the 1857 *Moxon Tennyson*, a collection of poems by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. While the publisher originally wanted Royal Academicians to illustrate it, Millais recruited Rossetti and Hunt instead. This changed the entire production of the book. The Pre-Raphaelite illustrations provided personal and intellectual readings of the poems. They did not just show a scene from the text. They acted as part of a larger, unified art object. Rossetti also worked to improve the design of Victorian gift books. He wanted book bindings and illustrations to match the principles of the Aesthetic Movement.
