Dane Cook is a prominent American stand-up comedian and actor. He is best known for his specific comedic style, which focuses on long-form storytelling. This means he tells extended, detailed stories rather than just quick jokes. He also utilizes multipurpose phrases to engage his audience. His performances often include observational, vulgar, or dark comedy. Cook has built a massive following by being one of the first comedians to use personal webpages and Myspace to connect with fans.

To develop his unique stage persona, Cook draws from his childhood experiences. He explains that his performance style is a combination of his parents' personalities. He describes his mother, Donna, as being very physical and "wiggly," much like a Looney Tunes cartoon character. His father, George, had a way of speaking that sounded very confident, even when he knew nothing about a topic. By absorbing these two different ways of acting, Cook created his own way of performing. He also uses his background in graphic design to create his own merchandise. This includes designing the cover art for his first comedy album, Harmful If Swallowed.

Cook's path to success included a very difficult early experience in 1992. He was part of a group of local comedians performing at the Boston Garden. The crowd was waiting for the band Phish and was not interested in comedy. The audience expressed their displeasure by throwing shoes and lighters at the stage. Cook and his fellow performers sustained minor injuries during the incident. Instead of giving up, Cook used this dejected moment as motivation. He made a determination to one day return to the Boston Garden and perform successfully.

His professional career accelerated rapidly during the 2000s through various media. In 2003, he released his first CD/DVD, Harmful If Swallowed, which was certified platinum. His second album, Retaliation, released in 2005, became a massive commercial success. It went double platinum and was the highest-charting comedy album in 28 years. This achievement made him the first comedian to reach the top 5 on the Billboard charts since Steve Martin in 1978. Cook also launched his own production company, Superfinger Entertainment, to manage his albums and videos.

Cook has achieved several major milestones in live performance and endurance. In 2007, he became the second comedian to sell out the large arena space at Madison Square Garden. Only Andrew Dice Clay had accomplished this feat previously, back in 1990. Cook also set impressive records for stage endurance at the Laugh Factory. On April 10, 2007, he performed for three hours and 50 minutes. While others eventually broke this mark, Cook later set a new record on January 1, 2008, by performing for seven hours straight.

Beyond the comedy stage, Cook has maintained a steady career in film and television. He has appeared in several movies, including Employee of the Month and Good Luck Chuck. He also took on a dramatic role in the film Mr. Brooks, which grossed $48 million in total. In the world of animation, Cook provided the lead voice for Dusty Crophopper. This character appeared in the 2013 film Planes and its 2014 sequel, Planes: Fire & Rescue. He has also appeared on popular television programs like Saturday Night Live.

Cook's work extends to international tours and humanitarian efforts. In 2008, he traveled to Iraq with Robert Kelly and Al Bene to perform for the troops. This USO tour allowed him to bring entertainment to service members. He also frequently tours internationally, including appearances at the Montreal "Just For Laughs" festival in Canada. Even when facing challenges, such as a controversy regarding a joke in 2012, he has used social media to apologize and express regret. His career shows how a comedian can move from small clubs to massive arenas and film studios.
