The climate in Dali is a subtropical highland climate. This is known scientifically as a Köppen Cwb climate. The high elevation helps keep the weather mild. Winters are typically short, mild, and dry. Frost can occur during these months. However, daytime temperatures usually warm up significantly. Summers are warm and rainy. Dali has a deep and complex history. The area was once known as Xiemie. The old town served as a medieval capital for two different kingdoms. First, it was the capital of the Nanzhao kingdom from 779 to 902. Later, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Dali from 937 to 1253.

During the Yuan Dynasty conquest, the city was razed. Many historical records were also burnt. The current old town was organized in the late 14th century. This happened under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The region later became a center for the Panthay Rebellion from 1856 to 1863. A massive earthquake also caused severe damage in 1925.

Tourism is now a major part of the local economy. The city is an official tourist destination in China. Many visitors come to see the natural scenery and cultural heritage.

To protect this appeal, there are strict building codes. New construction in the old town must follow traditional Chinese styles. Buildings must use tiled roofs. They must also use bricks, plaster, or white-washed walls. This helps maintain the historical feeling of the area. Much of the service industry now caters specifically to these travelers.

Historically, Dali was a center for important trade. It could control trade between India and China. The town of Xizhou was famous for its skilled woodworkers. Dali is also known for producing high-quality marble. This stone was used for both decoration and construction. The material was so famous that the modern Chinese word for marble is "Dali stone."
