Ramaphosa's early life was defined by his fight against apartheid. Apartheid was a system of laws that treated people very unfairly based on their race. Born in Soweto in 1952, he became involved in student politics while studying law. This activism led to him being detained by the government. He spent eleven months in solitary confinement in 1974. He was also detained for six months in 1976 following the unrest in Soweto. Despite these challenges, he completed his legal studies through correspondence.
After his studies, Ramaphosa focused on protecting workers' rights. In 1982, he helped launch the National Union of Mineworkers, or NUM. He served as its first secretary. Under his leadership, the union grew rapidly. It went from 6,000 members in 1982 to 300,000 members by 1992. This meant the union controlled nearly half of the black workforce in the mining industry. He also helped organize the Congress of South African Trade Unions, known as COSATU.
Ramaphosa played a vital role in the transition to democracy. In 1991, he was elected secretary-general of the ANC. He worked under the ANC president, Nelson Mandela. Ramaphosa became the chief negotiator for the ANC. He led the discussions that eventually ended the apartheid system. Following the first democratic elections in 1994, he served as the chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly. This group was responsible for helping create the new laws of the country. However, he resigned from politics in 1996.
During his time away from government, Ramaphosa became a very wealthy businessman. He used the Black Economic Empowerment, or BEE, policies to grow his interests. He founded the Shanduka Group, which invested in energy, banking, and telecoms. By 2014, Shanduka was worth more than R20-billion. 
Ramaphosa eventually returned to public service and political leadership. He rejoined the ANC in 2012 and became the deputy president of South Africa. He served in this role under President Jacob Zuma from 2014 to 2018. In February 2018, the National Assembly elected him as the president of South Africa. 
Today, Ramaphosa continues to represent South Africa on the global stage. He has met with many world leaders to discuss international relations. He has held meetings with leaders such as Joe Biden and Boris Johnson. In 2024, the National Assembly elected him to a second term as president. His journey shows how a person can move from labor organizing to global diplomacy.
