Cyanogen

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cyanogen is a colorless gas with a sharp, pungent smell. It is a chemical compound made of carbon and nitrogen. Its formula is (CN)2. This gas is highly toxic to living things. It can be very dangerous if inhaled. It can cause headaches, nausea, or even death.

The gas is also known as a pseudohalogen. This means it acts like a halogen, such as chlorine, but it is less oxidizing. Its molecules are linear, which means they are shaped like a straight line.

Scientists can make cyanogen in several ways. One way is to use heat on mercuric cyanide. Another way is to mix copper salts with cyanides. This creates an unstable copper(II) cyanide. This substance then breaks down into cyanogen and copper(I) cyanide. In big factories, workers make it by oxidizing hydrogen cyanide. They often use chlorine or nitrogen dioxide to help this happen.

It can also form when an electrical spark hits nitrogen and acetylene. When it burns in oxygen, it creates a blue flame. This flame is very hot. It reaches temperatures over 4500 degrees Celsius. This is the second hottest flame known to science.

Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac first made cyanogen in 1815. He found its formula and gave it a name. He used the Greek words "kyanos" and "gennao." These words mean "blue" and "to create." He chose these because cyanide came from Prussian blue. This pigment was first found by Carl Wilhelm Scheele.

Cyanogen became very important in the late 19th century. It helped the fertilizer industry grow quickly. It is still used to make many types of fertilizer today. It also helps stabilize a material called nitrocellulose.

Cyanogen is also found in space. It exists in the interstellar medium between stars. It is also found in comets. In 1910, scientists studied Halley's Comet. They used a tool called spectroscopy to look at its tail. They found cyanogen there.

This discovery caused a lot of fear among people. They thought the comet tail would poison the Earth. In New York, some people wore gas masks. Merchants even sold "comet pills" to stop poisoning. However, the tail was too thin to have any effect on our planet.

There is also a solid version called paracyanogen. This is a polymer, which is a large chain made of smaller parts. It is made by heating mercury(II) cyanide. You can also make it from silver cyanide or cyanuric iodide. Scientists think its structure is irregular. Most of its carbon atoms are of a specific type called sp.

You can turn paracyanogen back into gas by heating it. This shows how different forms of the same chemical can behave. It is amazing how one gas can change so much.
