He was born in Chicago in 1942. His mother and grandmother taught him to love gospel music. He even sang in a church choir when he was seven. When he was ten, he got his first guitar. He loved that instrument so much that he slept with it. He taught himself how to play music. He learned by listening to singers like Muddy Waters.

In 1956, Mayfield joined a group called The Roosters. This group later became the famous vocal group The Impressions. He became the lead singer and wrote many of their songs. One of his most famous songs is "People Get Ready." This song was even ranked on a list of the 500 greatest songs ever. He also started his own record label called Curtom Records in 1968. This allowed him to produce music for many other artists too.

In 1970, Mayfield started working as a solo artist. He released a very successful soundtrack for the movie Super Fly in 1972.

This album sold more than 12 million copies. It was different from other movie music from that time. Instead of just being fun, his lyrics talked about real life in cities. He wrote about hard topics like poverty and crime. His music helped start a new style of socially conscious soul music. This style used funky beats to share important messages.

Mayfield's life had some very difficult moments. In 1990, some heavy lighting equipment fell on him during a show.
