Cumulonimbus clouds are huge, tall clouds.

They grow upward because of strong air currents. These currents carry water vapor high into the sky.

At the top, water turns into ice crystals. These crystals can make hail or lightning. These clouds are often called thunderheads. They can bring heavy rain and strong winds. Some can even make tornadoes.

Large clouds often have a flat top. We call this an anvil. This shape happens when wind hits the top of the cloud. Sometimes, a small cap cloud forms on top. This is called a pileus.

These clouds go through three stages. First, they grow. Next, they reach a mature stage. Finally, they begin to die out. This whole way can take about 30 minutes. Some clouds can last for many hours or even days. Fire can also make these clouds. We call those pyrocumulonimbus clouds.
