Cuiabá is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.

It serves as a vital economic and cultural hub for the region. The city is located near the geographical center of South America. It also forms a large metropolitan area with the neighboring town of Várzea Grande.

Many people call the city the "Southern gate to the Amazon." This nickname reflects its position in a unique transition zone. Here, three major Brazilian ecosystems meet: the Amazon, the Cerrado, and the Pantanal.

The geography of the area is shaped by its proximity to the Chapada dos Guimarães mountain range. These mountains can block polar air masses from moving through. This effect contributes to the extremely hot weather found in the city.

Cuiabá experiences a tropical savanna climate, also known as a Köppen Aw climate. This means the weather is typically hot and humid. Rainfall is concentrated between October and April. From May to September, a mass of dry air inhibits rain formation. During this dry season, relative humidity can drop below 15 percent. This low humidity can lead to more respiratory diseases among the population.

The history of Cuiabá began with the arrival of Portuguese explorers known as bandeirantes. These men were explorers, slavers, and fortune hunters from the São Paulo region. In 1718, Pascoal Moreira Cabral arrived at the site. He traveled up the Coxipó River and found the area abandoned. After a battle with the Coxiponé Indians, his group discovered gold. Cabral sent a letter on April 8, 1719, announcing this discovery. This news triggered an immediate gold rush.

Many prospectors arrived from São Paulo to find wealth.

Formal settlement grew from these mining activities. The city was founded on January 1, 1727, by Rodrigo César de Menezes. Its official name was Vila Real do Senhor Bom Jesus de Cuiabá. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in the center. This church marked a location with a rich seam of gold. However, the early town faced a major disaster in 1746. An earthquake destroyed much of the settlement. Later, in 1835, Cuiabá became the capital of the Province of Mato Grosso. It replaced Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade as the seat of government.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city's importance shifted. During the Paraguayan War from 1864 to 1870, Cuiabá experienced an economic boom. It supplied timber, sugar, and foodstuffs to Brazilian troops. After the war, the town entered a period of decline and isolation. This isolation helped preserve old Brazilian ways of life for many years. In the 1930s, new roads and aviation began to reduce this isolation. The city saw rapid growth after 1960, following the creation of Brasília. Between 1960 and 1980, the population grew from 50,000 to over 250,000 people.

Today, the economy of Cuiabá is driven by commerce, services, and industry.

The industrial sector is largely focused on agribusiness, especially food processing. This supports the massive production of soybeans and rice in Mato Grosso. In 2003, the city's GDP was 4.75 billion reals. By 2006, the GDP had risen to over 7.1 billion reals.

The city is also a major center for education. The Federal University of Mato Grosso is located here.

It provides higher education to many students in the region.

Culture in Cuiabá is a rich blend of European, African, and Native American influences. This diversity is visible in local music, dance, and craftwork. Numerous museums, such as the Historical Museum of Mato Grosso, reflect this heritage.

The city also maintains green spaces like the Mãe Bonifácia State Park. These parks contain typical Cerrado vegetation. Cerrado plants often have thick bark and deep roots. These features help them survive the periodic fires of the savanna.
