Venezuela is currently experiencing a massive socioeconomic and political crisis. This crisis involves deep problems with money, government, and daily survival. It is considered the worst economic collapse in Venezuela's history. Experts say it is even more severe than the Great Depression in the United States. In 2019, the Institute of International Finance called it a massive collapse. This was the largest economic collapse outside of a war in 45 years.

The crisis functions through several interconnected economic and political mechanisms. One major factor is hyperinflation, which is when prices rise extremely fast. This rapid increase causes the local currency, the bolívar, to lose its value. Another mechanism is the country's high dependence on oil exports. When oil prices fall, the government loses the money it needs to function. Low oil prices in 2015 and a drop in oil production made things worse. Lack of maintenance and investment caused this drop in production.

There are several distinct stages to this unfolding history. The first stage began during the presidency of Hugo Chávez from 1999 to 2013. He used rising oil prices to fund social programs called Bolivarian missions. These missions built free medical clinics and provided food and housing subsidies. However, the government also used price controls and high spending. These actions became unsustainable as the economy faltered. By 2010, Chávez declared an "economic war" due to increasing shortages.

The second stage intensified under Nicolás Maduro after Chávez died in 2013. Maduro continued many of the previous economic policies. He used price controls to try and make goods more affordable. However, these controls often led to a surge in demand that could not be met. By 2014, the country entered a deep economic recession. The economy contracted by nearly 5% in some quarters. By 2016, the inflation rate reached 800%, the highest in the nation's history.

The significance of this crisis is seen in the suffering of the people. By 2017, hunger had reached a critical level for many. Almost 75% of the population lost an average of over 8 kg of body weight. In 2021, the Living Conditions Survey showed that 95% of the population lived in poverty. Of those people, 77% lived in extreme poverty. This was the highest level ever recorded in the country.

Massive emigration is another notable result of these difficult conditions. Many people have left Venezuela to find safety and stability elsewhere. By 2021, 5.4 million people had already left the country. By 2024, that number grew to roughly 7.7 million people. This large movement of people is known as a diaspora. The United Nations also reported serious human rights concerns during this time. They noted thousands of killings by government security forces in 2017 and 2019.

This crisis connects to broader global issues like international sanctions and governance. Many countries, including the US and the European Union, applied sanctions. These sanctions targeted government officials and the military due to human rights abuses. Some reports say these sanctions caused a loss of $38 billion between 2016 and 2019. Supporters of the government blame these sanctions and falling oil prices for the trouble. Critics, however, point to corruption and economic mismanagement as the primary causes.
