The crime of apartheid is a serious legal term. It describes a system where one racial group rules over others. This system uses unfair rules to keep groups apart. These acts are called crimes against humanity. This means they are very grave and harmful to people. The goal of such a regime is to maintain power. It uses systematic oppression to stay in control.

This crime works through institutionalized rules. This means the unfairness is built into the laws of a land. One group dominates others through many different methods. These methods are used to keep the groups separate. The intention is to keep the power in one group's hands. This is not just about one person being mean. It is about a whole system designed to be unfair. It is a way of controlling many people at once.

History shows how the world began to fight this. The word apartheid comes from Afrikaans. It means "apartness." In South Africa, this system began after 1948. On July 12, 1948, Padmanabha Pillai from India wrote to the United Nations. He shared concerns about how ethnic Indians were treated. Later, the Soviet Union and Guinea shared early drafts for a law. In 1973, the United Nations agreed on a formal text. This became the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid.

Many facts surround these international laws. The 1973 convention has 107 parties. It came into force in 1976 after 20 countries ratified it. These countries included Benin, Bulgaria, and the USSR. However, some nations like the United States did not sign it. In 1977, a protocol called apartheid a war crime. The International Criminal Court started on July 1, 2002. It lists apartheid as one of eleven crimes against humanity. In 2021, two former police members were indicted for apartheid.

These laws connect to how we see justice today. The International Criminal Court can prosecute people for these crimes. It works when a crime happens in a member state. In 2024, the World Court looked at Israel's policies. It found some rules were in breach of racial discrimination laws. In 2024, South Africa also started legal cases about the past. These legal tools help the world understand what is right. They aim to stop unfair systems from continuing.
