A counterattack is a special way to fight back. It happens when one side successfully defends against an enemy. After the defense, the defenders quickly start their own attack. The main goal is to catch the enemy by surprise. This can help a group take back land they lost. It can also help them destroy the attacking group. Sometimes, a much larger attack is called a counter-offensive.

To make a counterattack work, timing is very important. The defenders must strike quickly and with great force. They want to shock the enemy and overwhelm them. A good counterattack often happens when the enemy is off guard. They might think they are winning or moving forward safely. This is when they are most vulnerable to a sudden strike. Using surprise is the best way to win.

History shows many famous examples of this tactic. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte used it at the Battle of Austerlitz. He wanted to fight the Austrian and Russian armies. Napoleon made his men look weak to lure the Allies in. He even left his right side open on purpose. This was a trap to make the Allies move.

When the Allies attacked his right side, they left a hole. A large gap opened up in the middle of their line. Napoleon saw this gap and attacked right through it. He also moved his forces to the sides to surround them. This massive move helped the French army win the battle. Another huge event was Operation Bagration in the summer of 1944. The Soviet Red Army used 1.7 million soldiers for this strike.

During Operation Bagration, the Soviets used clever tricks. They built fake army camps to fool German leaders. This made the Germans think the attack would be in Ukraine. Because of this, the Germans moved their troops away from Belorussia. On 22 June 1944, the real attack began in Belorussia. The Soviets even used partisan groups to destroy German railroads. This made it very hard for the Germans to move supplies. By 3 July, the Red Army captured the city of Minsk.
