Companies want to protect their work. They use tools called copy protection. This helps stop people from making extra copies of things. You can find these tools on DVDs, video games, and music CDs.

Many companies use these tools to make money. They worry that people will copy their work for free. In 1990, lost money from copying was $2.4 billion in the United States. This is why they use technology to keep their work safe.

Some people call these tools digital rights management, or DRM. DRM is a broad way to manage rights. It can even make a video rental expire after a certain time. Other tools are called technological protection measures, or TPMs. These are tools used to limit how people use a work.

Copy protection is not perfect. It is very hard to stop all copying. If a person can hear music, they can record it with a microphone. If they can see a film, they can record it with a camera. This is called the analog hole. Some people also find ways to break the digital locks. These people are often called crackers.
