Today, the tournament usually follows a specific way it works. Most often, it features 12 teams in the competition. This includes all 10 CONMEBOL teams and two guest teams. For example, Mexico often joins the group. In some years, teams from Japan or Qatar have also played. In 2016 and 2024, the tournament grew even larger with 16 teams. These extra teams come from the CONCACAF group. The matches use a system of groups and knockout rounds. The winner of the final match takes home the trophy.

The history of this event began a long time ago. The very first tournament took place in 1916. It was called the Campeonato Sudamericano de Football. Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil were the first four participants. Uruguay won that very first edition in 1916. They tied 0–0 with Argentina in the final match. This match was held at the Estadio Racing Club in Avellaneda. Soon after, the CONMEBOL group was founded to manage football.
