Controlled burn

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A controlled burn, also known as a prescribed burn or Rx burn, is the intentional setting of fire to alter a landscape.

Land managers use these fires to change the types of vegetation and decaying material in an area. These burns serve several vital purposes, including forest management and ecological restoration. They are also used for land clearing and wildfire fuel management. By removing excess material, these burns can help protect human communities and infrastructure.

Scientists often conduct these burns during cooler months to manage the fuel load on the ground.

The mechanism of a controlled burn relies on managing how fire moves through an environment. To control the direction and speed of flames, crews use different ignition techniques. A backfire, or back burning, is lit so that it must burn against the prevailing wind.

This creates a slower, more controllable fire that leaves a "black line" of burnt ground. This line acts as a barrier that a larger wildfire cannot cross. In contrast, head fires burn with the wind and move much faster. These are used when fuel moisture is high or wind speeds are low. Crews may also use a flank fire, which is lit at a right angle to the wind.

Controlled burns are essential for many fire-dependent species that rely on heat to reproduce. Some plants and trees are described as pyriscent, meaning their seeds or cones require heat to disperse.

For example, the giant sequoia depends on fire to open its cones and release seeds. This process also clears out non-fire-adapted species that would otherwise compete with seedlings. In Australia, the mountain ash, or Eucalyptus regnans, has a unique relationship with fire. While a wildfire might consume the adult trees, their seed capsules drop seeds that survive in the ash. These seeds use the nutrient-rich ash to grow quickly and dominate the land.

History shows that fire has been a tool for humans for many millennia. Indigenous people across the world have practiced cultural burning to promote biodiversity.

In Australia, Aboriginal people used fire-stick farming to cultivate wild crops. However, colonial laws in North America and Australia once prohibited these traditional practices. This displaced indigenous people from their lands and changed how ecosystems functioned. In recent years, fire control authorities have begun reintroducing indigenous leadership into land management. This shift helps restore natural fire regimes and improves ecological health.

In many ecosystems, controlled burns are used to restore the balance of native species. In North American prairies, burns mimic low-intensity natural fires to shift plant composition.

These burns often occur in early spring before native plants begin active growth. This timing ensures that only non-native species, which sprout earlier, are affected. In grasslands, these fires can also reveal mineral soil layers, which increases the vitality of new seedlings. Such management helps maintain the specific assemblage of species that define a healthy grassland or shrubland.

Managing a prescribed burn requires a highly organized team and strict safety protocols.

A leader known as the Burn Boss oversees the entire operation. The team includes roles for communications, ignition, and suppression. During ignition, workers may use a driptorch, which is a canister that spits flaming fuel through a wick.

The Communications Officer tracks wind speed and direction to help the Burn Boss plan fire lines. After the ignition phase, the suppression team performs a "mop up." They use suppression packs or vehicles equipped with water tanks and pumps to extinguish smoldering material.

Controlled burns also play a role in broader environmental and agricultural systems. In agriculture, the practice is sometimes called slash and burn or field burning. It is used to clear crop residue and kill weeds, which can be cheaper than using herbicides. In Australia, strategic patch burning on savannas can help reduce long-term greenhouse gas emissions. One example is the West Arnhem Fire Management Agreement, which uses early dry-season burns to create a mosaic of burnt and unburnt land. This strategy reduces the likelihood of intense, late-season fires that release more gases.
