It is a document processor, which is a way to prepare manuscripts. It is based on a system called TeX. This system helps with typesetting, or the way text looks on a page. ConTeXt is great for making structured documents. It is also very good at fine typography. This means it can control the tiny details of letters and spaces.

Users can make many different layouts and styles easily. This is much simpler than learning low-level computer code.

Making a document with ConTeXt follows a clear path. First, a person writes in a plain text file. This file uses a markup language to give instructions. The user can add things like colors, backgrounds, and hyperlinks. They can also use footnotes or special fonts. Next, the user runs a script to compile the file. This process turns the text into a PDF file. A PDF is a file that looks the same on any screen. It can also create a DVI file.

ConTeXt has a long history starting in the early 1990s. Hans Hagen and Ton Otten created it in the Netherlands. They worked for a company called Pragma ADE. The tool was originally called pragmatex. Around 1996, it was given the name ConTeXt. This name comes from Latin. It means "text with tex." Before 1996, it was only used within their company. After that, more people began to use it. In 2010, the ConTeXt Group was officially created.

There have been many different versions of this tool over the years. Older versions were called MkII and MkI. These versions are no longer maintained by developers. In 2007, the first public beta for MkIV was released. The current version is called LMTX. It was introduced in April 2019. LMTX is the successor to Mark IV. It uses a special engine called LuaMetaTeX. This engine was made specifically to work well with ConTeXt. It helps the program run much faster.

ConTeXt can do many things that other tools do. It can handle many different languages and scripts. It works with English, Dutch, German, French, and Italian. It also supports Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The tool can even draw beautiful shapes and ornaments. It uses a drawing engine called MetaFun for this. It also has a module called PPCHTeX for science. This module helps people draw chemical structure diagrams. It is a very flexible way to build documents.
