It is based on a system called TeX. This system helps with typesetting. Typesetting is the way text is laid out on a page. ConTeXt gives users a lot of control over how pages look. You can use it to make many kinds of layouts. It is very good at making fine details in text.

It can also handle many languages. It works with scripts for Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese. To use it, you write in a plain text file. Then, you run a script to turn it into a PDF. A PDF is a file that stays the same on all screens. ConTeXt can also draw shapes and ornaments. It uses a tool called MetaFun to do this. It can even make diagrams for science. Hans Hagen and Ton Otten created it in the Netherlands. The name means "text with tex." The newest version is called LMTX. It came out in April 2019.
