Conservative Judaism, also known as Masorti Judaism, is a major Jewish religious movement.

It is currently the third-largest Jewish movement in the world. Experts estimate its total following is close to 1.1 million people. This includes more than 600,000 registered adult congregants. The movement is known for its specific view on Jewish law, or Halakha. Followers believe that Halakha is binding and must be followed. However, they also believe it is subject to historical development over time.

This means they see tradition as something that evolves through the generations.

The mechanism of the movement relies on a balance of tradition and modern research. The Conservative rabbinate uses historical-critical research to study religious laws. This is a scientific way of looking at how texts and customs change. Instead of using only traditional methods, they look at the historical context of laws. They believe the authority of Jewish law comes from the assent of the people. This means the collective choices of the community over many years create legitimacy. The movement views itself as an authentic continuation of legal discussion. It seeks to maintain loyalty to received forms while allowing for flexible interpretation.

There are several different approaches to theology and revelation within the movement. One school of thought suggests that God inspired human authors to record a message. These authors then perceived and wrote down what they felt was divine. Another school, influenced by existentialist thinkers, suggests a different view. In this view, God simply conferred His presence upon people. This experience then drove those people toward spiritual creativity.

Some members also follow the philosophy of Mordecai Kaplan. He viewed all scripture as a purely human product. These different views create a very pluralistic environment. The movement often avoids strict theological definitions to allow for this diversity.

The history of the movement begins with the positive-historical school in 19th-century Europe.

Rabbi Zecharias Frankel is considered its intellectual progenitor. He believed that the practices of the community were a primary source of authority. He used critical methods to study the development of the Oral Torah. While he accepted that human innovators shaped the law, he held different views on the Pentateuch. The movement became fully institutionalized during the mid-20th century in the United States. This period saw the movement grow into a structured religious system with many organized branches.

Institutional leadership plays a vital role in the movement's global presence. The Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) is the largest rabbinic seminary.

It is located in New York and serves as a major center for learning. In North America, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism acts as the main congregational arm. On a global scale, affiliated communities are united under Masorti Olami. This umbrella organization helps connect various Jewish communities around the world. These institutions help maintain the movement's identity across different continents.

Beliefs regarding God and the afterlife vary among followers. Many members uphold a theistic view of a personal God. The 1988 Statement of Principles, Emet ve-Emunah, affirms faith in God as the Creator. However, the document also notes that the nature of God is elusive. Most theologians in the movement believe in the immortality of the soul. Regarding the Messiah, the movement has rephrased many traditional petitions. They have rejected the renewal of animal sacrifices in modern practice. They also avoid dogmatism regarding the end of the world, calling it philosophically unjustified.

Conservative Judaism connects religious life to the broader field of historical study. By adopting an evolutionary approach, the movement views religion as something that develops. It absorbs external influences and changes as society changes. This distinguishes it from more radical modernizers. It also differs from strictly traditionalist groups. The movement emphasizes that changes to the law should only happen with great care. Leaders like Solomon Schechter promoted the idea of "Catholic Israel." This concept placed the center of authority in the living body of the community. This community is best able to meet the religious needs of the current age.
