Conservation of mass

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The law of conservation of mass says mass stays the same. In a closed system, mass cannot be created or destroyed.

A closed system is a space where nothing enters or leaves. Inside this space, matter can only change its form. It can move or rearrange into new shapes.

Think about a chemical reaction. This is a way that substances change into new ones. The mass of the starting materials, called reactants, stays equal to the mass of the products. For example, if you burn methane and oxygen, you get carbon dioxide and water. The total mass does not change.

Scientists studied this for a long time. Mikhail Lomonosov helped describe this law in 1756. Later, Antoine Lavoisier proved it with careful tests. He used sealed glass jars to weigh things. He showed that burning wood does not make mass vanish. It just turns into gases. This discovery helped turn old ideas into modern chemistry.
