The Congo Free State was a massive area in Central Africa. It existed from 1885 to 1908.

This land was not part of the country of Belgium. Instead, it was the private property of King Leopold II. He was the king of Belgium, but he owned this land alone.

This meant he had absolute power over the region. He ruled it from his home in Brussels. He never actually visited the Congo himself. The state covered the area we now call the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Leopold used a clever plan to take control of this land. He told other European leaders that he wanted to do good work.

He said he would help people and stop slave traders. He also promised not to tax trade in the area. This happened during the Berlin Conference in 1884 and 1885. To make his plan look real, he started a group called the International African Association. This group was supposed to be for science and helping people. In truth, it helped him claim the Congo Basin for himself.

An explorer named Henry Morton Stanley helped the king.

Stanley traveled through the region from 1879 to 1884. He built a road and used steamers on the river. Stanley also met with local chiefs and leaders. He made them sign treaties for the land. These documents gave the rights to the land to King Leopold II. This helped the king secure a very large piece of Central Africa. These actions turned the king's idea into a real state.

While Leopold said he wanted to help, his real goal was money.

His administration wanted to sell ivory, rubber, and minerals. They used companies to take these things from the land. This work was very hard and very unfair for the local people. Many people were forced to work and were treated very badly. Some experts believe half of the people in the rubber areas died. They died from hard work, violence, or new diseases. This caused a huge international scandal in the early 1900s.

Many people eventually stood up to stop the unfair treatment.

A man named Roger Casement wrote a report about what was happening. Other people like E. D. Morel and Arthur Conan Doyle also spoke out. They formed groups to tell the world the truth. Because of this pressure, the Belgian Parliament took over the land in 1908. It was no longer the private property of the king. The land became a colony called the Belgian Congo. This change happened because people around the world demanded justice.
