This means the bridge parts reach out from tall supports. It uses a post-tensioned concrete box girder structure. These are large, hollow concrete parts that provide strength. The bridge rests on 62 piers, which are the tall legs in the water. Forty-four of these are the main piers. Most of the bridge stays above the water. There is a navigation span so big ships can pass through.

There are many rules for using the bridge. It is a two-lane toll bridge. It connects Borden-Carleton in Prince Edward Island to Cape Jourimain in New Brunswick. Drivers pay a toll when they leave Prince Edward Island. The toll rate changed many times over the years. In 2022, the rate was $50.25 for a car. However, the Federal Government reduced this to $20 on August 1, 2025. This was part of a promise made by Mark Carney.

In the 1870s, people first talked about a permanent link. For a long time, steamships carried people and mail. Some used iceboats when the water froze. In 1915, a new ferry service began. Later, the government decided a bridge was a better way to travel. Now, it takes about 12 minutes to drive across the bridge.
