Concubinage refers to an interpersonal and sexual relationship between two people. In this arrangement, the couple does not enter into a full legal marriage. This might happen because they cannot marry or because they choose not to. While these relationships are often seen as similar to marriage, they are usually considered mutually exclusive. This means they are distinct legal or social categories. The term "concubine" describes the person in the relationship.

The mechanics of concubinage varied based on social and legal rules. Often, the relationship was defined by an inequality of status. In many societies, the concubine held a lower social rank than a legal wife. This inequality affected many parts of life, including inheritance and property rights. Some couples entered these unions voluntarily to avoid legal complications. For example, men might avoid marriage to prevent dividing family wealth among many heirs. In other cases, the relationship was involuntary, often involving enslaved people.

Historians often categorize concubinage into several distinct types. One type is royal concubinage, where politics and reproduction intersect. In this form, concubines could be consorts to a ruler to help maintain a royal bloodline. Another type is elite concubinage, used by men to increase their social status. In some cultures, this was a way to satisfy desires while maintaining a primary wife. A third type is common-law concubinage, which serves as a way for couples to live together without marriage. Finally, some scholars identify concubinage as a form of sexual enslavement within patriarchal systems.

History shows many different ways this practice appeared across the globe. In ancient Mesopotamia, the Code of Hammurabi recorded practices regarding reproduction. A barren wife might give her husband a slave as a concubine to produce heirs. In ancient Rome, the practice was called "concubinatus." This was a monogamous alternative to marriage, often used by widowed or divorced men. After the Roman Empire became Christian, emperors actually improved the status of concubines. They granted them and their children certain property and inheritance rights.

In other regions, concubinage was a massive institutionalized system. In China, it was a formal practice that lasted until the 20th century. Some royal households in Asia and the Middle East kept thousands of concubines. For these rulers, having many partners served as a powerful status symbol. It also ensured the production of many sons to continue the dynasty. In Meiji Japan, the practice was also used as a sign of high social standing.

During the era of European colonialism, the practice had specific political uses. Administrators in colonies sometimes encouraged European men to form relationships with local women. They believed this would help men understand native cultures more deeply. They also believed it provided essential domestic labor for the men. This meant men did not need to bring wives from Europe. However, this changed when these relationships produced a mixed-race class. Administrators feared this new group might threaten colonial rule. To stop this, they began encouraging white women to move to the colonies instead.

These historical unions had lasting effects on global populations. In the Dutch East Indies, these relationships created the Eurasian Indo community. In India, they contributed to the formation of the Anglo-Indian community. Throughout Africa, slave concubinage resulted in many racially mixed populations. These demographic shifts occurred as a direct result of these social structures. The practice of such unions often declined following the abolition of slavery.

In the 21st century, the meaning of the term has shifted significantly. In many Western countries, it is now used as a gender-neutral legal term. It refers to cohabitation, which is when two people live together. This includes same-sex partners who choose not to marry. In Switzerland, the term is still used as a legal status for cohabitation. The word itself comes from the Latin "concubitus," meaning to lie together. While its historical roots are complex, its modern usage continues to evolve with society.
