Concubinage is a type of relationship between two people. In this setup, the couple lives together in intimacy but does not have a legal marriage.

People might choose this path for many different reasons. Sometimes, laws or social rules make a full marriage impossible for them. Other times, a couple might simply not want to enter a legal contract. While it looks like marriage, it is often seen as a separate thing. In many cultures, the status of a partner in such a relationship was different from a wife.

How these relationships worked depended on where people lived. In ancient Rome, some men chose a relationship called "concubinatus."

They often did this to avoid complicated rules about money and inheritance. After Rome became Christian, emperors actually gave these partners more rights. They allowed the children to own property just like the children of wives. In other parts of the world, the rules were much stricter. In ancient Mesopotamia, a husband might take a slave as a concubine if his wife could not have children.

These children were still seen as legitimate members of the family.

History shows that powerful leaders often used concubinage to show their status. In parts of Asia and the Middle East, some rulers had many concubines.

Some royal households even had thousands of them. For these leaders, having many partners was a way to show great wealth. It was also a way to ensure they had many sons to carry on their family line. In China, this was a formal practice that lasted until the 20th century. In Meiji Japan, it was also used as a way to show high social standing.

Sometimes, these relationships were part of much harder and unfair systems. During the time of European colonialism, administrators encouraged certain relationships. They believed it would help men understand local cultures or provide help around the house.

However, this often involved enslaved women. In many slave-using societies, most concubines were actually slaves. This was a very difficult and unequal way to live. In places like the Dutch East Indies, these unions created new groups of people, like the Eurasian Indo community. In India, it led to the Anglo-Indian community. These groups formed because of the mixing of different cultures and people.

Today, the way we use the word has changed quite a bit. In the 21st century, the term is used differently in some Western countries. It is now often a gender-neutral legal term.

It can describe any two people who live together without being married. This includes same-sex partners living in a shared home. In Switzerland, the term is still used as a legal status for people living together. While the word comes from ancient Roman law, its meaning continues to evolve as society changes.
