Concept album

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A concept album is a musical collection where the tracks hold a larger meaning together than they do alone. Instead of being a random list of songs, the album follows a central purpose. This purpose is usually achieved through a single narrative or a specific theme. The theme can be found in the lyrics or the musical composition. Sometimes, the theme is purely instrumental. Other times, critics use the term for albums that show "uniform excellence" despite lacking a clear motif.

Artists use several methods to build these unified works. One common approach is the use of a narrative, which tells a story through the songs. Another method involves a compositional theme that ties the music together. Some artists use segues, which are musical transitions that allow songs to flow into one another without gaps. This can transform a collection of songs into a single, cohesive work. Some even create rock operas, which are extra-long albums featuring characters and consistent storylines.

There are various types of concept albums that have emerged over time. Some are viewed as expanded rock albums that act like a play or an opus. Others are collections of songs that revolve around a single, specific theme. In the 1960s, the rock concept album became a recognized phenomenon. This era led to the birth of the rock opera. These can be shorter works or very ambitious, long-form projects. Some albums are even built around a single songwriter's specific ideas or a particular subject.

The history of the concept album begins well before the rock era. Many point to Woody Guthrie's 1940 album, Dust Bowl Ballads, as a precursor. This album featured semi-autobiographical songs about American migrant laborers. In the late 1940s, the introduction of the LP record allowed for new creative possibilities. Space age pop composers began creating albums meant for specific moods, like dining or relaxing. The invention of the gatefold in the mid-1950s also helped. This allowed artists to include liner notes that explained the album's concept to the listener.

Pop singers were early pioneers of this artistic attitude. Frank Sinatra is often credited with bringing a conscious artistic approach to recording. He sequenced his songs to create a narrative flow similar to musical comedy or opera. His albums like In the Wee Small Hours (1955) were early examples. Nat "King" Cole also developed this art by building song collections around single themes. In the 1960s, the Beach Boys released albums like Pet Sounds (1966). This record was conceived as an integrated whole with a deliberate sequence of songs.

The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) is a major milestone. While some claim other albums were first, Sgt. Pepper made the concept convincing to most listeners. The artwork even reinforced the theme by showing the band in new uniforms. The album also omitted the usual gaps between tracks. This era saw incredible commercial and critical success. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (1973) reached massive heights. It is ranked as one of the greatest progressive rock albums and is the second-best-selling album of all time.

Concept albums eventually spread across many different musical genres. In the 1970s, progressive rock used them to explore ambitious, lengthy forms. Soul musicians like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder used the format to reflect the African-American experience. Even disco music adopted the concept style. Some disco albums focused on science fiction themes like UFOs and galactic exploration. In country music, Willie Nelson released highly prominent concept albums. These diverse uses show how a single musical idea can connect many different worlds.
