Most compasses use a magnetized needle. This needle sits on a tiny pivot. The pivot lets it turn easily. The Earth has a magnetic field. This field acts like a giant magnet. It pulls on the needle. This pull makes the needle point toward magnetic north.

Long ago, people in China used a natural stone called lodestone. They used it to make early compasses. Some people even used a lodestone spoon. This spoon would turn to show north and south.

Modern compasses are very clever. Many have a capsule filled with liquid. The liquid helps the needle stop moving quickly. This makes the compass easier to read. Some compasses use special paint to glow. This helps you see the needle in the dark. Some use tritium. This is a tiny bit of radioactive material. It lets out light without needing any sun. This makes the compass ready to use at any time.
