It sits right in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. The region is located on a large, flat area called the Central Plateau. To the south and east, it meets Castilla–La Mancha. To the north and west, it borders Castile and León. The area is shaped roughly like an equilateral triangle.

The big city of Madrid is its capital. This city is also the largest place in the region.

Nature in Madrid changes depending on where you go. The land is part of the Tagus River basin.

In the north, the Guadarrama mountains rise high into the sky. Some peaks go above 2,000 meters. Peñalara is the highest peak in this range. In the south, the land is much lower and flatter. The Alberche river sits at about 430 meters high. Many reservoirs and dams hold water across the landscape. The Santillana reservoir is the largest one you will find.

Many different living things call this place home. You might see the Iberian ibex climbing on the rocks.

Large birds like the Spanish imperial eagle also live here. In the mountains, you can find the fire salamander. Some reptiles, like the Algerian sand racer, live in the area too.

Forests cover a large part of the region. Many trees like Scots pine and Pyrenean oak grow on the slopes.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Archaeologists found items from the Lower Paleolithic period here. They even found a bell-shaped vase from the Bell beaker culture.

In the north, the Sistema Central mountain range rises high. This range is also known as the Guadarrama mountains. The landscape varies from high peaks to low-lying plains. The province is roughly shaped like an equilateral triangle. The city of Madrid sits near the center of this triangle.

Climate and altitude change how the land feels. The region has a generally temperate climate. It ranges from Mediterranean to semi-arid types. Mediterranean climates often have dry summers. Semi-arid climates are also quite dry. The capital city has a cold semi-arid climate. In the mountains, the weather is much colder. The peaks can have temperatures below freezing in January and February. Madrid is the European capital with the lowest average annual precipitation. This means it receives very little rain on average. Many reservoirs and dams exist to manage water. The Santillana reservoir is the largest in the area.

The mountains provide a home for many species. Peñalara is the highest peak in the Guadarrama range. It rises to 2,428 meters above sea level. Other high points include the Bola del Mundo at 2,258 meters. These high areas support dense forests of Scots pine and Pyrenean oak. The Lozoya Valley hosts a large colony of black vultures. The Iberian ibex is another famous animal here. These animals were reintroduced in 1990 after being gone for a century.

About 51.4% of the region is already covered by forests. Many efforts have been made to repopulate the land with trees.

During the Roman Empire, the area was part of the Citerior Tarraconese province. Important Roman roads crossed the land. You can still see Roman mosaics in places like Complutum.

The region also contains four World Heritage Sites. These include the Monastery and Royal Site of El Escorial.

It also includes the historic centre of Alcalá de Henares.
